At Home Mama

When was the last time that you considered starting a home-based business?  Perhaps the real question is, when was the last time you were not considering the possibilities?  We live in a world where two income homes are the norm and the idea of one managing without a second income seems unbearable.  And, of coarse, we all know families who do make it on one income, but we also know how many struggle.

When my husband and I married nine short years ago, we were both working in youth ministry.  If you are familiar with the income that the average parish youth minister earns, you may have smirked at that piece of news.  But, even so, we determined to make all of our financial decisions based on Chris’ income alone.  When I became pregnant with our first baby right away, Chris left his Youth Ministry position and went back into the engineering world where we would have a good income and health insurance.

After becoming pregnant with our second child, I too left my youth ministry position.  For quite awhile I contemplated how I could continue my love for ministry while being home with my children.  For me, income was not the primary goal; it was a desire to make a difference and to help others.  But, my first priority was my growing family.  Going back into Youth Ministry, full time, was not an option if I had to leave the children God gave to Chris and I.  I was not cut out to balance raising a family and being outside the home.

After the birth of our third child, Faustina Grace, a home-based business fell into my lap.  Faustina became very ill and a dear friend recommended a series of natural products that, she said, may be able to help her.  The doctors were stumped and so I called the distributor who my friend had told me about.  Two weeks later, I was amazed and my business began.  My initial goal was to earn enough to pay for our products, then to get Chris back out of the corporate world.  Today, with four children, our goal is to help other families better their lives and to use our full time income to make a difference in Gods’ world.

A home-based business may be the answer your family needs to enable you to stay home and still bring an additional income into your family.  In my next article, I will talk about finding the right opportunity for you.

Becky CashBecky Cash is the author of the column, "Catholic At Home Mama." With the help of her wonderful husband and through the grace of God, Becky has created a full time income while working around her families schedule. In this column, she will share the "not so secret" splendors of how you can discern your families financial path and, do so, while keeping your family first. As a Catholic mom, Becky knows that we struggle with the need to both meet our families physical and spiritual needs. Through her business, Becky has been able to meet her families health needs, contribute to the household income and keep her children out of daycare.
