Balancing Work and the Children this Summer
by Becky Cash

Hello, as I get ready to launch our brand new blog and podcast on building homebased businesses, I am reminded that it is time to post a new article at Catholicmom.com.  Thankfully, Lisa, a work from home mom herself, is forgiving.

Summer is upon us and many of you may be wondering, “How on earth can I balance work and the kids being home?”  The simple answer is, flexibility.  I realize this may not be easy if your job assignments have parameters and deadlines.  For this reason, I truly love the blessing of having my own business.  Some days, I just cannot work.  Some days, I plan to work and it just does not get done.  But, most days, I have a plan.  I have four beautiful energetic children, most of whom will soak up their summer in front of the television if I allow that to happen.  If I do not plan, I fail both myself and my children.  So, here is what I do…

My husband also works from home and so I make myself keenly aware that his work comes before mine.  In our home, he does work for another company and they pay him a check for his work.  He has specific things that must get done.  Thankfully, he works for the Catholic Company, a company that we both truly love and believe in.  That makes this personal commitment of mine that much easier.  So, each week, I ask him when his meetings and interviews are (he interviews authors for a podcast).  This helps me to plan.  If I have a meeting, appointment or phone presentation that overlaps his meetings, etc., I know that I need to schedule childcare for those hours.  While he works from home, he needs to be able to focus at these times.   He also honors me by asking my plans if he has work related or home related endeavors that are not on the calendar.

Next, I look at my schedule for the week, and try to schedule camps and alternative fun activities for the children during times when I know that we do not have childcare options or that I will have a heavier schedule.  We do use sitters in our home, and truly, summer time is easier for that than during the school year.  We earn enough to afford older sitters; however, if your budget is tight, call on younger girls to be mothers’ helpers while you are home.  They love playing with little ones, most can make a sandwich and open a banana and you may just turn them into your best babysitter one day.  They typically ask for much less (ask their moms how much to pay them if unsure), and for a couple hours, they will be your best friends.

Finally, save some clean, fun activities for those times when you must get work done and the kids will be at your feet.  Oh, and do yourself a favor and give up the clean house for the summer!!!
