On Sunday, January 19, 2003 we have the
readings for the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our church's
Christmas season ended last week as we commemorated the Baptism of Our
Lord, Jesus and the beginning of his public ministry of spreading the
Gospel of Salvation.
Our readings this Sunday invite us to follow Jesus and
to live our lives for him. In the first reading (1 Samuel 3:3-10,19),
young Samuel hears God's voice calling him, but doesn't immediately
understand God's call. Our beautiful Psalm for this week (Psalm 40)
invites us to pray "Here I am Lord; I come to do Your will." Do you
know what it means to "do God's will"? This means that we take time
each day to pray and learn more about what God wants us to do in our
lives, and then we try our best to do these things lovingly and with all
our hearts. In our Gospel on Sunday (John 1:35-42) we see
Jesus beginning to call His disciples to follow Him.
This week, we pray especially for "Vocations" to our
Church. We pray that good, holy people will hear the call of God in
their lives and answer by choosing to become a Priest, Religious Sister,
or Brother. Just as God called Samuel and Jesus called his
disciples, God is calling each of us for a special job in serving Him and

Learn more about the Priests and Sisters at your
church and what they do. These are wonderful people who have
devoted their lives to serving God and our Church. Take some time
this week to thank them for all they do...maybe you could make a card or
bake cookies for them. Also, learn more about vocations and think
about how God is calling you!
