On Sunday, May 9, 2004 we have the readings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter.  This week's Gospel story contains a special message for each of us.  In this Gospel passage, Jesus was talking with His disciples just hours before He would die.  He shared with them the following words:

My children, I will be with you only a little while longer.
I give you a new commandment: love one another.
As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
This is how all will know that you are my disciples,
if you have love for one another."

When Jesus gave this new commandment to His disciples, He was giving it to you and me too!  Love is at the heart of this week's gospel, as it should be in our own hearts.  During this Easter season, let us remember the love that Jesus had for His disciples, and let us look around our own homes, schools and communities for ways to spread and share this love.  Let's make it easy for people to know and see that we are followers of Jesus by the way we live and love!
