Think You're Prepared for Childbirth? Let's Check it Out!

Even though you have a ton of friends who have given birth, no one experience is really alike. Here are some tips that might help in better preparing you for the real event:

* Making memories doesn't have to begin after baby is welcomed into the world. Keep a journal from the time you find out you are pregnant right through the first year. That first year will fly by and you will wonder where it went, so journal right from the start and thus be able one day to look back at this incredible experience written in your own words.

*As the due date gets closer, be sure that you have a good network of people on hand for support. For example, of course hubby will want to be there, but how about mom or mom-in-law? Tell them they are more than welcome to come along when it's time to go to the hospital. Ideally, it should be someone your spouse feels comfortable with, too. Why? He needs someone to lean on just as much as you do. Who else might better fit this bill than his own mom?

* Be sure you have someone around to pick up where you left off with household chores and cooking. It's the best gift anyone can offer. While you will be busy with a new baby and new feeding schedule, if sister, aunt, mom or mom-in-law can be around to pick up the many jobs you normally do, you will feel a little more at ease knowing things are being done.

* In the last two months of pregnancy, preparing for breast-feeding is a pain-saver. If you will practice tugging and pulling on your nipples to toughen them up, the beginning weeks of breast-feeding will not be nearly as painful.

* Much of the time - do not ask me why - baby arrives between 11:45 p.m. and 3:45 a.m. Be prepared by packing your suitcase early and checking it twice.

* How does a new mom-to-be know if the pains mean that birth is imminent? When your water breaks, wait for contractions to come at regular intervals. They usually last for a longer time. You might also experience a higher degree of pain.

* Once you are checked into the hospital, what about ice chips to help calm your nerves and cool you off? Do they really work? Ice chips do the trick for many, but perhaps a fruit slush or crushed ice is your preference. Let the hospital nurse know. They usually have them - all you have to do is ask.

* After baby arrives, ask relatives and friends to be mindful of touching and kissing the new family member. A sick baby is the last thing you need. Ask them to wash their hands and to save those kisses for later.

Most of all, remember that while there are always things that happen differently to each mom-to-be, you can count on being prepared the best way you know how - don't try to do every little thing yourself. Anytime you feel like you are just not well enough to do anything, much less think straight, ask for help and accept it. It's perfectly normal and everyone will be happier in the end.
