Children's Project: Mother's Day Garden Bouquets

Additional Mother's Day Articles and Ideas

Children need only to journey through their own backyard to search for the perfect Mother's Day gift. May gardens explode with colorful choices from which they can make simple, hand-tied bouquets. One of our favorites is pictured above.

Before you start

Gather together a wide-necked bottle or vase, a twist tie, cut flowers, a collection of ribbon and handkerchiefs, and your child's magical touch.

Directions

1. Begin by picking flowers, grasses, and leaves from the garden. Children will intuitively choose a variety of colors and textures that catch their eye. Try to limit your bouquet to three or four plant materials. As always, simple is best.

2. As a temporary stand, place the flowers in a wide-necked bottle or vase. To keep the arrangement in place, secure a twist tie around the stems and remove the bouquet from the bottle.

3. Vintage handkerchiefs, linen napkins, bandannas or silk ribbons enhance the beauty of fresh picked flowers. Place the bouquet in the center of a handkerchief. Pick both up together. The handkerchief will naturally drape around the stems.

4. Place a 12 to 18-inch ribbon on the table. Place the bouquet in the center of the ribbon and tie a bow to secure the handkerchief and stems.

5. The classic beauty of a bouquet tied with a single ribbon makes for an elegant gift, as well. For variation, tie the stems with variegated grass. What mother can resist being presented with a hand-tied bouquet and a kiss? In this project, children succeed by making a gift all by themselves.
