Mother's Day Gift Ideas

As Moms ourselves, we recognize the importance of taking time out to offer appreciation and love to the special women in our lives.  Whether that's Mom, Grandma, Godmother or any other unique individual who has played a role in your own upbringing or that of your child, take some time this year to let her know you appreciate her.

During the next few weeks, we will be gathering your ideas and suggestions for special Mother's Day gifts.  Crafts, homemade items, and other creative ideas help make this a lasting memory for that special lady.  To share your idea, email Lisa@catholicmom.com and we will post your suggestions here.

Gift Suggestions from Catholic Moms:

  • SJ:  I went to JC Penney over the weekend and they had these gorgeous silk roses on sale for only $9.99  that were planted in pots and looked like the real thing so I bought one for my mother.  I picked the one that was smaller, only had one open rose and one bud and I plan on putting it on a tray and showing up on Saturday morning (Sunday's for me) with it, with breakfast on it for her!   I make a great chocolate scone and it is her favorite, so I'm serving it with some fruit and coffee....I'm just going to show up at her door and surprise her, so she has no idea. Lisa:  My husband will be working on Sunday, so I plan to spend the morning with my boys and my MIL...I think I will have her over after Mass and break out the best china for special coffee and some pastry or other treat.  Of course, the boys will be making her cards too!
  • Manita:  We like to get a garden hat and fill with seed packets, and a digger, new gloves, sunscreen, etc... Then buy grandma a lot of flowers to plant in her planters, and window boxes
  • Theresa MK:  I actually requested an exercise mat and my husband was appalled. He said, what kind of message would we be sending? To which I replied, " that you care about my health, well-being, and self-image." He still doesn't get it 100%, but says I'll get it.  Having received a gift certificate for a day at a spa, I highly recommend those. You can go for just one service, which is very reasonable. Pedicures, manicures run around $20. Facials are in the $50 range, and Swedish massage is $50-70. Soooooo worth it.
  • Shell:  one of the most wonderful things my DH did for me was Breakfast in Bed - what a treat! We usually take my Mom out for lunch or supper. In regards to gifts, she always says "if I can't eat it or wear it I don't want it." (meaning that she really doesn't NEED anything...and she doesn't expect a gift!)
  • Sassy:  We always send gift certificates for our mom's pharmacy. I know sounds strange but both of them take medication and both have a co pay so that seems to work out the best. If they don't need the meds they can spend it on something else.
  • Cyndi:  This year I took black and white pictures of the boys, and I'm having them printed sepia to look old-fashioned. I've also made a few shirts with transfers from the digital camera and grandparents love them.
  • Shell:  A friend's DH just called me this morning to request a favor. He wants me to make business cards for her (she is a SAHM) with the job title "Director of Social Development" and the tag line at the bottom "Specializing in molding the next generation." Isn't that sweet of him? I thought that was really a creative idea and maybe some others would like duplicate it for their Moms.

Mother's Day Recipes:

  • Chocolate Chip Scones
    (Pre-heat Oven to 425F)
    * 2 cups self-rising flour
    3 Tbls sugar
    1/2 c shortening
    1/2 c milk
    1 lg egg
    1 tsp vanilla ext
    1/2 c semi-sweet choc chips

In large bowl combine flour and sugar. Using a pastry blender, cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, combine milk, egg and vanilla. Add to crumb mixture. Add chocolate chips, blending with fork til mixture clings together and forms soft dough. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently 5 or 6 times. With a lightly floured rolling pin, ( I just use my hands) roll the dough into about a 7" round. Cut into 8 wedges and place scones 1 inch apart on a greased baking sheet and pierce tops with fork.  Bake approx. 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve warm for best flavor. Great with coffee or hot tea! Enjoy!

*Add 2 tsp. baking powder + 1/2 tsp salt if using regular flour.
