I wanted to share with you an article that came out recently from the Catholic News Service entitled "Educators see challenges for single parents". The article addresses recent studies that point to the educational challenges faced by children being raised in single parent homes. The article shares quotes from our own Susan Handle Terbay, as well as a few insights I shared with the reporter. My "take" on this whole topic is that we, as Church and as community, need to do our very best to support every type of family. I have some friends who are single mothers doing amazing things in the raising and faith formation of their families. Whenever I look at them and see how diligently they give themselves in service of their children, I truly consider them heroes.
Does your diocese or parish do anything unique or special to support single parents? Are you a single mom, and if so, what type of support and encouragement would be of help to you in your vocation?
