I don't typically recommend books I haven't completed yet, but in the case of The Soul Reader by Gerard D. Webster, I am making a special exception. Why break my own rule? Because when it comes to the writing of one of my favorite Catholic fiction authors, this book is sure to be a winner.
The Soul Reader is the sequel to one of my favorite novels of 2008, In-Sight. In this follow up, Webster gives us more of the two compelling characters who drew me in so compellingly in In-Sight. Here's a blueprint of The Soul Reader:
The two people Ward McNulty most wishes he could forget were the woman he once loved and the man he still hates.
It’s a year after his father’s murder, and he is torn between seeking vengeance or forgiveness. But when his ex-girlfriend, Carrie Hope, re-opens the investigation into the unsolved crime, Ward is faced with a difficult choice: he can allow her to pursue the investigation alone and possibly be killed…or he can join her in the hopes of being able to protect her. Ward decides to collaborate with her, and thereby launches a series of events that span the globe—from Colombia to Rome—and make Ward and Carrie the target of the most dangerous assassin in the western hemisphere, a man known only as “Culebra.”
It is in seeking justice that Ward discovers mercy—and love—once again.
The Soul Reader has earned high praise from several endorsers, who call the book "fast-moving and highly entertaining" and praise its Catholic themes and flavor. Indeed, when I read In-Sight I really had the sensation of being able to see the book played out in movie format. The Soul Reader holds that same promise: a great story that draws you in, keeps you on the edge of your seat, but doesn't harm your soul in the process.
Along with it's rave reviews, The Soul Reader has earned the Catholic Writers Guild Seal of Approval and was a finalist in the "Best Books 2011 Award for Religious Fiction".
I'll hopefully be following up soon with my full review of The Soul Reader but I hope that if you're looking for a great novel to enjoy that you'll check it out for yourself. Available in hardcover, softcover and Kindle formats, The Soul Reader would make a terrific fiction read during our Lenten journey.
