Catholic Writer Resurrects The 1950s

Uncommon Glory

Drexel Hill, PA (USA) - September 14, 2012 - James Hugh Comey, an award winning writer, has released a Catholic, coming of age enovel called Uncommon Glory. 

Set between 1957 and 1960 outside Philadelphia (PA) and Atlantic City (NJ), the story centers around an Irish-American altar server who is beaten senseless in a graveyard after 40 hours devotion. When he comes to, he discovers a power and a presence that changes everything. It’s spring 1957. Life is slower and families are stronger. But, violence swirls around quirky teenagers and adults as rock and roll pulses from the radio. In this American Graffiti meets A Prayer for Owen Meany story, the altar server discovers that he must open up and redeem the lives of others, while he struggles to make sense of his own. Moby Dick, a devilish teenager who carries a nightstick, Mr. Peanut, Ricky Nelson, the Atlantic City Steel Pier diving horse, and Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour (the 50s version of American Idol) are woven throughout this sad and funny story.

Comey is Jesuit trained (St. Joseph's Preparatory School, Philadelphia, PA), with three deceased Jesuits, including Father Dennis Comey, the Philadelphia Waterfront Priest, in his lineage. He received a Serra International Altar Server Award, worked as a gas jockey before there were self service gas stations, and watched a drive in movie once from a graveyard. He taught English from 6th grade through college levels, acted in industrial and corporate films, and is the Writer-in-Residence at Stages of Imagination (www.stagesofimagination.org), a nonprofit, entertainment and learning organization that he cofounded. He has written a novella (Death of the Poet King), plays seen by 200,000 children, award winning CDs and a film, and book reviews published in national and international journals. He holds a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education.

With the decline in church attendance and the sense of disconnect that some Catholics have now with the Church, Uncommon Glory will remind many of a time when friendships lasted forever and miracles were possible.
