Good Counsel is a nationally recognized non-profit that provides residential care and community-based services for homeless, expectant, and new mothers and their children within the context of the Catholic social tradition. Since opening in 1985, almost 6,000 women and children have safely spent more than 540,000 nights in one of our loving residences. We also conduct a post-abortion ministry and referral network called Lumina while operating a national Helpline for new and expectant mothers.
On July 15, 2007, William McGurn wrote these prophetic words in his Wall Street Journal column, “Main Street”, about the importance of our work:
“Just imagine... beside all those Planned Parenthood clinics, a place not unlike Good Counsel where a scared young pregnant woman could carry her baby to term, complete her education, train for a new job, and be treated with the love and respect that a mother needs and deserves. Those words were never more true than today... Real choice means having the support to follow through on a pregnancy. As you know better than anyone, Good Counsel is one of the too few faith-based maternity homes available to distressed mothers.”
For a homeless, pregnant mother living on the street, Good Counsel is more than food and a warm, safe bed. It is more than direction, guidance, support and encouragement during a difficult time just before and after giving birth – alone – without any family or friends in sight. In the words of many of our mothers, Good Counsel is "a family", "healing of old pains", "discovering new hope while beginning again", and "a new life with love."
The need for Good Counsel is great and growing. Would you please consider supporting us in this unique pro-life ministry? To learn more and to make a donation, please visit http://www.goodcounselhomes.org or contact us at 201-795-0637.
