Prayer Wreath Craft Emphasizes Power of Children's Prayer

Children can sometimes feel helpless when watching sad news on the television or hearing it on the radio. They feel helpless to do much. However, they should be reminded that their prayers are very real, and they can inspire the very real God of our salvation to do things.

This prayer wreath can help you emphasize the power of prayer.

Materials:

• Lots of bright red ribbon
• Lots of green construction paper
• Markers
• Ruler
• Glue
• Scissors
• Staple
• White poster board
• Plastic bags and small bakery boxes

Instructions:

• Using white poster board, cut out circles approximately 9”x9” that will form the base of the wreath.
• Cut out enough wreath bases so that each person has a wreath.
• Using green construction paper make outlines of hands and wrists of each person.
• Cut out the hand-outlines. Note: Since each child will want 8 or 9 hand prints, show them how to put two sheets under the sheet with the hand print and thereby cut out three hand prints at once.
• On each cut-out hand write a simple prayer request, such as “food,” “medicine,” and “toys.” Each hand will have a different prayer. Young children may need help if they cannot yet write.
• Paste hand prints on the white circles. (The “wrists” should slightly overlap each other). Keep making and pasting hand-prints until every child has a wreath with prayers. The same prayers can be on each wreath.
• In the center of the white poster board, have students write a title such as “Prayers for People in _________.”
• When completed, tie or staple red bows to bottom of wreaths.
• Children will hang their wreaths someplace where they will be reminded every day to pray for all the suffering people in the world.
