This wasn’t the topic I set out to write this month for CatholicMom.com, but while walking on the treadmill last night and attempting to solidify my thoughts on the other topic, the Holy Spirit said: Not so fast, Lisa Schmidt! I have another topic for you!
As I walked, I fired up a podcast on my iPhone, and it was one of the best talks I’ve ever heard. It was Dr. Meg Meeker giving a fired-up talk on the challenges we Catholic parents have in our contemporary culture. As I listened, I identified with so many of the issues she presented. I suspect others might relate, too.
You may very well be familiar with Dr. Meg Meeker and her work. She has the heart of a mother and the wisdom of a pediatrician. She’s also the author of several books including the popular Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters. Back in March 2013, Dr. Meeker presented a talk at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Plymouth, Michigan titled, “How to Raise Strong Catholic Families in a Difficult Culture.” The pastor at OLGC is Fr. John Riccardo. You may recognize him from his popular radio show, "Christ is the Answer" heard on EWTN Catholic radio.
The parish recorded Dr. Meeker’s talk and has made it available for free via podcast. Find it on Fr. Riccardo’s iTunes channel here -- search for “How to Raise Strong Catholic Families in a Difficult Culture” dated March 26, 2013. The podcast is also available for direct download to your desktop from Fr. Riccardo’s website here.
I invite you to gift yourself with an hour and really listen to Dr. Meeker’s presentation. Fire it up on your iPod while taking a walk. Stream it on your computer while preparing dinner. Or pour yourself a glass of something after the kids are in bed and simply sit and soak up Dr. Meeker’s wisdom. Then come back here and let me know what you thought of the talk.
Were you challenged by Dr. Meeker’s words like I was? What was it that spoke to you most?
