Today's Gospel: John 14:1-6

In Christ, time and space open up, like a passage to Narnia.  I don’t mean that in some vaguely pseudo-mystical way.  I mean it in cold, hard reality.  God is eternal – timeless and outside of time.  He takes up no space, but sustains all space.

I can’t get to Heaven from earth.  You can hop on a space ship and travel in whatever direction you like, you’ll never get over the last cloud, or around the last planet, and into Heaven.  This makes faith so very hard: a Heaven we cannot see.  We can’t even see the door to it.

Except at Mass.  There the door comes to us, and it looks like bread and wine.  But it is God.  God coming to live in us, here, until we can go to live with Him, there.

It’s a hard, crazy kind of faith we have to have, because we were not made for it.  We were made to live with God, to see Him face to face, to walk with Him every evening in the garden.  We weren’t made to live so separate.  It hurts.  We want to see the door, we want to be sure it’s the door, we want to peek around the other side and know for certain what lies behind the door.

Well, original sin destroyed that door.  And that door came back to us, God made flesh, and re-opened the way.

Ponder:

What’s troubling you today?  What is the thing you don’t quite understand?  Don’t quite trust God with?  What is the door you can’t see?

Pray:

Lord, help me to trust in you.  Help me to be certain that following you will take me where I need to go.  Help me not be afraid when you lead me around a blind corner.  Give me the grace to certain that no matter what happens, you have a place for me in Heaven and you are going to get me there.  Thank you.  Amen.
