Daily Gospel Reflection for May 17, 2014

Today's Gospel: John 14:7-14

When we look at the miracles Jesus performed over and over again while on earth, it shouldn’t be too difficult to understand that He truly is the Son of God; that He and God are one.  His death and resurrection are the ultimate proof which the apostles learned a little later in the story. For us, who have read ahead, there can be no doubt that Christ is in the Father and the Father is in Him.

So where is our faith in Jesus and His Father?  Why do we still worry about the little things in life?  Probably concupiscence, thank you Adam and Eve!

But we can grow beyond the temptation to doubt or worry and truly believe that God is God! I am not! He’s got this!!  So when we ask, expecting to receive, ultimately the only thing for which we need to ask is His mercy, our salvation, our ultimate hope and good.

In the Maronite Rite of the Catholic faith during petitions, the response of the people to each petition is, “Lord, have mercy.”  Why?  Because ultimately we are to have the faith that God will give us all we need on this earth and the only thing for which we should really yearn is His mercy so that we can be with Him in Heaven.

So when he tells us “Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; if you ask anything in my name, I will do it,” (John 14:13-14), what more could we possibly need and desire than salvation?

Ponder:

Am I as concerned for my salvation and the salvation of my family as I am the day to day temporal needs?

Pray:

Lord, have mercy! Amen.
