Daily Gospel Reflection for July 24, 2014

Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:10-17

“Blest are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear” (vs. 16). I use to think that Jesus was talking to his disciples at the very moment in time who were seeing and listening to him. Now, however, I hear Jesus talking to me in this verse. I am blest. I have been given the grace to see Jesus in a small, white host and in the people around me. I hear Him in Scriptures, in the advice of my pastor, parents and friends, and in the laughter of my children. I am blest, indeed!

“To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven” (vs. 11). How privileged we are to know the mysteries of God revealed to us through His Church. We know our prayers of praise and adoration, the love that we share, and our communion with saints enable us to bring about God’s kingdom here on earth as it is in Heaven. Even here on earth, I am blest.

“For to him who has, more will be given, and He will have in abundance” (Vs. 12). As Catholics, we have in abundance God’s grace, His life in us through the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist. We have also been given much more in the prayers of the Church, the examples of the saints, the devotions, sacramentals, and traditions. The Church has given us the Bible, the inspired Word of God. More has been revealed to us through Sacred Tradition, too. Through the Church, I am blest.

How has God blessed you in giving you the gift of the Catholic faith?

Pray:

Thank you, Lord, for granting us the grace to be Catholic. Through the many gifts you have given us, may we see and hear you in our everyday lives. Through us let your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
