Inside the New Evangelization

CCL instructor and best-selling Canadian author Ellen Gable Hrkach knows that experience firsthand. A mother of five and president of the Catholic Writers Guild, Gable Hratch writes what she calls “edgy Theology of the Body fiction,” weaving Church teaching on chastity and NFP into romances and thrillers whose Kindle editions have been collectively downloaded 500,000 times.

An early adopter of Facebook and Twitter, Gable Hrkach said new media allows her to reach people who might not otherwise encounter Church teaching. A casual tweet about NFP often leads to private inquiries, and the online CCL classes she has taught with her husband, James, have welcomed participants from across North America. Her readers, meanwhile, get “so swept up in the story, they don’t even know they’re getting theology.”

But online evangelizing is just part of her arsenal. In addition to teaching marriage preparation and CCL classes (in person) for the last 30 years, Gable Hrkach is fearless when it comes to spreading the Christian vision of sexuality in everyday life. “I’m very passionate about this issue because people’s souls are at stake.”

It is essentially a volunteer organization because services are provided by professionally-trained volunteers who are supported by a small staff at the international headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. Local Chapters of the organization consist mainly of certified Teaching Couples and Promoters, along with other supportive members.
