Today's Gospel: Luke 8:19-21

This is a short passage, yet a powerful one. When preaching, Jesus was told his mother and family were there. “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it,” he replies. Jesus realizes that if he were to go outside to where his family was, his teaching would have been interrupted. It was critical for the crowd to hear what was being taught, so that they may live in Heaven and on earth as brothers and sisters of Christ. Today, we all have the opportunity to hear Jesus’ teachings through daily and weekly Mass. By joining him there, hearing his word and sharing his meal, we become members of the family of God.

Ponder:

How often do I make time to read, hear or live God’s word? Do I act like a member of God's family to others? Do I speak with Jesus in prayer?

Pray:

Dear Jesus, you are the Way, the Truth, and the Light. Help me to draw closer to you through your Word and the sacraments. Make me a member of your Heavenly family today and every day.
