Today's Gospel: Luke 17: 26-37

In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks of His second coming. He reminds us of the time of Noah and Lot, when people were eating and drinking, unconcerned with the impending destruction. He tells us the same will happen before He comes again.

We are called to be actively waiting for this, not to be overly absorbed in everyday life. Jesus tells us that when He comes again, some of us will be taken into heaven with Him and some will be left. This will happen within our families and among our friends and coworkers. One will be taken, and one will be left. He also tells us that divine judgment will come as surely as vultures descend on a corpse. There is no way to avoid it. We must keep this in mind and live each day as if it could be the last.

Ponder:

Am I actively waiting for Jesus’ return? Or am I too absorbed in everyday activities? Do I pray for myself and for those who might be left behind?

Pray:

Jesus, thank you for the promise of eternal life. Teach me to live each day actively waiting for your return. Amen.
