Daily Gospel Reflection for May 17, 2015

Today's Gospel: John 17:11B-19

The Holy Trinity is a truth of our faith that cannot be understood in its entirety. Ultimately, we just take it on faith. So when we are called to image the Holy Trinity in our lives and relationships, how can we really image something we don't fully understand? Again, ultimately, only through faith. Think about it this way: is there a family member that you might not spend any time with if they weren't a family member? But, they are. So we accept them as they are and love them anyway. This is the familial image of the Holy Trinity. We have a communion of love in our family, even when we don't necessarily want to. But what about beyond our biological family? Are we supposed to be as receptive to others? To an extent, yes we are. Jesus said to His Father in today's reading, "Keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one." Christ calls us to a Trinitarian relationship with all. His death on the cross removed the obstacles of sin from between men. His cross became the bridge that connects us, one to the other, as a family in Christ. This is how we become one as Jesus and His Father are one.

Ponder:

Do I really see others as my brother or sister in Christ, made in the same image and likeness of God as I? Am I willing to walk the bridge Christ provided with His cross and become an image of the oneness of Christ and His Father, with the Holy Spirit?

Pray:

Lord, there is so much evil in the world. Thank you for the cross that became the bridge I must walk in order to take your love to others. May we be one, in your name, as You and Your Father are one. Amen.
