It's that time of year when many of us are getting ready for the kids to go back to school after a very nice, long, restful, active, and lazy summer.
Many of the kids are counting down how many days of late-night t.v. and games they have left. Others can't wait to use the new school supplies they are taking in their brand-new backpacks.
As for me, I am in between those two extremes. Being a mom, school teacher, and catechist I am excited, nervous, and a little sad about summertime ending.
I look forward to meeting a new class of 4-year-olds who have never been to school and nervous about their adjustment. I, like the kids with new school supplies, can't wait to begin using a brand new curriculum for Sunday school this year. But I am also nervous about my son starting 4th grade in a new school and nervous about his transition.
The summer was fun, busy, and a learning experience for me in many ways. I learned about patience, hope, and laughter as I spent time with my son talking, playing, and having memorable mother-son dates. This was wonderful but the many changes in my life that are unfolding had me not only trying to gear up for a new school year, but a new journey, as well.
A new journey that needs me to fill up my backpack with not only new school supplies, but new ideas and attitudes. Learning can be scary for many of us, me included, and the one thing that is always with me no matter if I'm gearing up for a new school year or a new life journey is my faith. The faith that allows me to hold Jesus' hand and let him lead me and guide me wherever that might be.
My hope is that no matter what my son and I are gearing up for now and in years to come, we always remember and never forget, that in the craziness of the new journey, the new season or the new school year, Jesus is always there waiting for us to hold his hand.
