Daily Gospel Reflection for August 22, 2015

Today's Gospel: Matthew 23:1-12

Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In our world today, it is very easy to seek recognition. Facebook informs us of engagements and weddings; blogs and Instagram give us proof of picture-perfect lives. It seems that we have opportunities fairly often to show the world how good we have it, and then to be “liked” or affirmed for that announcement.

But Jesus has another, more difficult, yet more fulfilling way. He encourages us to humble ourselves, not putting ourselves on a platform but instead taking the least desired, lowest place. Doing this, He assures us, will bring us more rapidly to His Father’s side.

Of course it is not bad to share good news with others, even via social media, but it is our deeper intention that we must consider. Let us affirm others before seeking affirmation ourselves.

Ponder:

Do I share for the sole purpose of building myself up? If so, I need to re-evaluate the places where I receive praise. Next time I talk about myself, I will ensure my purpose is not exalting myself.

Pray:

Dear Lord, help me to see that you build me up. Help me to rely on you for all my strength. Amen.
