“Sin makes you stupid.”

I don’t know where I first heard that phrase, but I love it. I love it because it is so simple and so true.

What is sin anyway? Sin is choosing a lesser good than God. The more I choose something that is bad for me, it weakens my will, and it blurs God’s will with my own. So, choosing anything less than God is, well, stupid!

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I command?”

As with most things, it’s easy to “talk the talk” instead of “walk the walk” as a disciple of Christ. We can have all of the head knowledge of the universe, but so long as we never allow Jesus to penetrate our hearts, we will remain stupid—stupid because we choose less than Him.

Ponder:

Jesus, what is preventing me from allowing you to be Lord of my life? (Meditate upon this question while gazing at a crucifix.)

Pray:

Loving Father, thank you choosing us to be your sons and daughters, and thank you for sending Jesus to free us from the bondage of sin. Thank you for the gift of the Church and its sacraments that help us to choose you and be reconciled to you. Help us to always remember that your commands always have our best interest at heart, as you are the ultimate loving Father. May we always seek to obey your commands instead of desiring our own will. Amen.
