Daily Gospel Reflection for November 1, 2015

Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12A

Solemnity of All Saints

In many ways, the Beatitudes offer a roadmap to heaven, for each beatitude offers us a spiritual pathway to follow so that we, too, may become saints in heaven. We live in a world that is turning its back on God. Evidence of this is everywhere. God’s name is prohibited from public schools where our children spend a majority of their day. Public signs of our Christian faith are systematically being removed from the landscape of many towns and villages for fear of offending others. If we are truly to be Christian in this world, then we are going to have to take a risk for the sake of the kingdom by standing up for what we know is morally right and ethically correct. In doing so, we will be ridiculed for our faith, but Jesus assures us that “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me, rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

Ponder:

Have you ever been insulted about your belief in Jesus? How did you respond? What is Jesus calling us to do?

Pray:

God of all saints,
Blessed be your unconditional love for us.
As we celebrate the Feasts of All Saints,
help us to draw strength from the courageous lives
of those saintly men and women who have gone before us,
so that one day we may be counted as blessed in the Kingdom of God.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
