Today's Gospel: John 6, 35-40

Bread is defined as “the food that one needs in order to live.”

Jesus says, “I am the bread of life.” I am. You wanted to know who I am. Well, I will tell you who I am. I am…the bread of life.

He’s offering us everything. He is telling the people who he is and why he is here and his message is one of hope. Hope after death and hope here on earth. He will not lose us.

"I am here to do my father’s will. It is his will that I lose nothing that he has given me."

Here hinges our Catholicity. Here hinges the Eucharist. Here does he declare, “I am.” The host that you take, that we take, the bread that we eat, is “I am.” It is LIFE. We go to Mass and we kneel and stand and sit and deal with our kids’ squabbles and potty breaks and nose bleeds (this is a real thing for me). Or maybe just our own stresses and things to get done. And there the Bread of Life lays, waiting for us.

He will not lose us. He will raise us up. It is the will of the Creator of the universe that you be in Heaven with him. Look at him, there on the altar. If you see him and believe in him then he has promised to raise you up. To not lose you. You are not lost.

Ponder:

When was the last time you sat in the presence of Christ in the Eucharist?

Pray:

Jesus, You are the bread of life. You are what I need to live. Help me today to live secure in the knowledge of that most precious gift.  Amen.
