Today's Gospel: Mark 10, 28-31

What have you given up for Jesus? While those in religious life can definitely say that they have given up their families and property for Jesus, where does that leave those of us who live in the world? Perhaps we read this and feel that we will not be as blessed. Perhaps we can feel as if we have chosen a lesser part. Yet, if we believe that God has called us to our vocation, then we must have something to offer as well.

The Christian life always requires sacrifice. How many of us have been rejected in large or small ways by our families for our religious beliefs? What about at work or out in the world? On social media? Have we given generously to others in Jesus’ name, giving up monetary property we could have used for ourselves? Have we chosen a less well-paying career because it allows us to be more of service to our fellow people? Have we given up a career in order to be more present to our children or to care for aging family members?

Our families and the world at large may reject our choices, but God will reward them. All of us who live a Christian life of sacrifice can take comfort in that. “Many that are first will be last, and [the] last will be first.” (Mk10:31)

Ponder:

Dear God, please help me to sacrifice in all the ways I should in Jesus’ name. Let me never choose the world over You.

Pray:

Has there ever been a time you have been rejected by someone you love because of your faith? Say a prayer for those who hurt you.
