Pain and fear of inadequacy,
Instantly swept aside.
Surprised as
A surge of motherly love
Rose up in my heart.
A sense of awe at
The miracle of creation.
We examined tiny,
Perfectly formed
Fingers and toes.
Startled by
Infant’s innate instinct
For survival as
He rooted hungrily,
Nursing moments after birth.
Pleased when
Baby quickly turned his head
Hearing the sound of our voices.
He recognized me.
Then,
Focused intensely on my face,
Bonding to me,
Ensuring I bonded to him.
Transformed instantaneously
Into a mother.
A gift from God,
Pure and simple.
