Every one of us can surely name some religious song that lifts our spirits, be it “Ave Maria” or “Here I Am, Lord.” But even music that is not specifically religious can have a spiritual side to it. Any beautiful melody can orient our thoughts towards God, the source of all creation – and that, in itself, is a kind of prayer. In this series, I'll highlight five pieces that, while not ostensibly “churchy,” are nonetheless very powerful at getting me into a prayerful, contemplative frame of mind. Sample them here, or make a playlist for your own quiet moments. [Tweet "Ginny Moyer highlights powerful secular music that puts her into a prayerful frame of mind."] **“The Rain” by Joe Hisaishi (on the album *[Blanc](https://www.amazon.com/Blanc-Angele-Dubeau/dp/B00HWR9136/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1469067725&sr=1-1&keywords=blanc)*)** I was playing this in my classroom before school started once, and a student told me it sounded “sad.” I think I’d call it “reflective” (and it does get slightly more up-tempo at the end). Whatever it is, it’s beautiful, especially as played by Canadian violinist Angèle Dubeau. https://youtu.be/3sEyog2CbV4 Which secular songs get you in a prayerful frame of mind?  What would you add to the list? **[Listen to my other Music to Pray By selections.](http://catholicmom.com/tag/music-to-pray-by)** *Copyright 2016 Ginny Kubitz Moyer* ### Share this article [![Share on Facebook](https://static.hubspot.com/final/img/common/icons/social/facebook-24x24.png)](http://www.facebook.com/share.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2F2016%2F08%2F03%2Fmusic-pray-rain%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Dfacebook) [![Share on Twitter](https://static.hubspot.com/final/img/common/icons/social/twitter-24x24.png)](https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?original_referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2F2016%2F08%2F03%2Fmusic-pray-rain%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Dtwitter&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2F2016%2F08%2F03%2Fmusic-pray-rain%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Dtwitter&source=tweetbutton&text=Music%20to%20Pray%20By%3A%20The%20Rain) [![Share on Email](https://static.hubspot.com/final/img/common/icons/social/email-24x24.png)](mailto:?subject=Check%20out%20https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2F2016%2F08%2F03%2Fmusic-pray-rain%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Demail%20&body=Check%20out%20https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2F2016%2F08%2F03%2Fmusic-pray-rain%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Demail) ** #### About the Author ![Guest](https://www.catholicmom.com/hubfs/Profile%203.jpg) ### [Guest](https://www.catholicmom.com/articles/author/guest) We welcome guest contributors who graciously volunteer their writing for our readers.
