Today's Gospel: Luke 16, 1-8
We live in a time of such casual waste it’s easy to lose sight of just how much God has given us, and how clumsily we sometimes handle that abundance. Like the “foolish steward” from today’s Gospel who squanders his master’s riches, then panics at the thought of being held accountable, it can be a real challenge for us to properly utilize the vast resources at our disposal. We get distracted, we lose focus, we’re not sure where all the time or money or energy went, we just know that it’s gone.
But this enigmatic parable also offers us a blueprint for rebounding after we have fallen short of God’s expectations. In Luke’s account, the negligent servant recognizes his failings and turns to his community for support, showing his associates compassion and generosity in hopes that they will reciprocate. This “shrewdness” ultimately redeems him in the master’s eyes and wins much-sought approval.
God calls us to do likewise - to connect with our fellowmen, to let others assist us when we need it, to recognize that our journey to Heaven involves companions along the way. We were never meant to “go it alone,” especially when we’re coming up short. Friends, family and compatriots help get us back on track by putting our struggles in perspective. Most important, they remind us of just how much we have to be thankful for, and inspire us to be great stewards of God’s ample bounty.
Ponder:
How can I be a better steward of the time, talent and treasure God has entrusted to me?
Pray:
Lord, help me to truly recognize, acknowledge and appreciate all you have given me.
