Today's Gospel: Mark 8:14-21 - Sts. Cyril & Methodius
My husband used to say, “We are raising our children to be our best friends!” First, we are their parents, then their peers, learning from each other. My husband’s words became a reality when our adult daughters married and we exchanged marital advice.
One daughter’s wisdom, “My husband and I choose friends who are happily married by putting marriage and family first.” Once married she quickly realized how easy it was to let a little “bad yeast” get into the “dough” of a marriage. Friends who admire, respect, and love their husbands in word and deed, keep the “bad yeast” from entering the “dough” of the soul. Sirach 6:17 guides us with the words, “Those who fear the Lord enjoy stable friendship, for as they are, and so will their neighbors be.” Choosing friends wisely helps you live your Catholic faith; not only in marriage but in every area of your life.
As a Valentine's gift to your spouse this year, do a heart check. Focus on spending time with those friends who help you to be a better wife and mother. If the ingredients that fill your heart are kind deeds and words that uplift others, then you will find the atmosphere of your marriage and your family rising upward with “good yeast.”

Ponder:
Has any yeast crept into your relationships? Check your friendships, are they leading you closer to Jesus and your spouse?
Pray:
Dear Jesus, may the bread we eat be your bread of life, nourishing our souls so we can feed you to our spouse, family, and neighbors! Amen
