Today's Gospel: Mark 12:18-27

Since my marriage in 1994, today’s Gospel has always made me a little sad - to think that I won’t be married to the love of my life in heaven. Jesus, however, is teaching us an important truth here, not just about the resurrection of body, but also marriage. The Church teaches that the purpose of marriage is mutual sanctification and procreation. Neither is needed any longer in heaven; therefore, marriage is no longer necessary.

Nonetheless, that does not mean that I won’t know my husband in heaven. On the contrary, my love for him will finally be perfect. I will know that he is part of the reason I am in heaven, just as I helped him get there, too. We will take great delight in loved ones sharing the beatific vision with us, especially our children, in whose earthy lives we played such an important role. Our family won’t be destroy or terminated, just enlarged. We will finally realize how much we are truly a part of God’s family.

Heaven will be the ultimate family reunion!

Ponder:

What can I do today to perfect a bit more my love for my husband?

Pray:

Father in Heaven, thank you for the gift of my husband. Help us help each other make it to Heaven where we will rejoice forever as Your children. Amen.
