Today's Gospel: John 6: 51-58

Today's Gospel, a portion of an important scriptural passage known as the "Bread of Life discourse", invites us to consider deeply the spirit of today's Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Following on the heels of a Eucharistic miracle--the feeding of the masses through the multiplication of the loaves--Jesus points his disciples in this part of the chapter to a core belief of our faith: the True Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

Today at Mass, many of us will have the beautiful opportunity to participate in special and solemn Eucharistic professions which provide us a powerful chance to witness to our communities the heart and soul of our faith. But the truth is that we witness this same beauty with every opportunity to draw near to Jesus at the Eucharistic table, at every holy Mass. Today, as I go forward to truly receive him, I know that I will once again marvel at God's goodness, his abundant generosity and mercy, and his love for me. Then, with Christ and his teachings truly within me, I will once again be called to be his hands, his heart, his love to a world that is desperate for the truth of the gospel.

To the altar, we are called today to receive Jesus within our hearts. From the altar, we are sent daily to live out in our own ways his mission of love.

Ponder:

Is my heart prepared to receive Jesus in the Eucharist today?

Pray:

Jesus, you gave your body and blood that I might know eternal life with and in and through your love. Help me today to know you more truly, to love you more deeply, and to share that same love with all that I encounter. Amen.
