Today's Gospel: Matthew 8:5-17

Today Matthew tells the story of the healing of the Centurion’s Servant. What faith that centurion had in Jesus Christ! His humility before the Lord would not allow him to ask Jesus to come home and heal his servant. He said that if Jesus just said so, the servant would be healed. Just like the centurion could order his soldiers and they would obey him without question, the centurion knew that if Jesus just said so, the servant’s body would heal. Jesus was amazed at the faith of this centurion.

Since they changed the wording in the liturgy a few years ago to reflect the passage about the healing of the centurion’s servant, it has affected me quite a bit. “Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” This statement makes me feel the humility of the centurion, and my own humbleness before the Lord. It is an awesome privilege to be able to partake in the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord. Sometimes participating in this breathtaking act is overwhelming. It is also the one thing that can heal our souls. We need to have the bold faith of the centurion but we must remember his humility before the Lord as well.

Ponder:

Do you have the faith that will amaze Jesus, yet the humility to know what a privilege it is to be healed by Him?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to have the faith of the centurion so that I might experience healing in my life. Help those suffering and in need to have the faith they need to receiving healing from You.
