What is the purpose of your life? This question only matters to a human being. An animal doesn't have the intellectual capability to think about the meaning of its own life. It lives to eat, sleep and reproduce. Nothing more. But a human being feels a longing about the meaning of his life, the reason for his existence. Whoever does not know the answer to this question or answers it in the wrong way ends up living in a way very similar to the animals. Every person that is baptized should have on the tip of his tongue the answer for the purpose of his life: to be, one day, with our Father, our Creator, in Heaven. The big problem is that many Christians live as pagans; they place the meaning of their lives in money, in pleasure, in power. They forget that the time they will spend on Earth is very short, but their souls are eternal. They end up trading everlasting happiness for a short time of pleasure and joy. Jesus calls this people fools!
“You fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be? So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Lk 12:20-21)There is nothing more important in this world than to take care of the destiny of our own souls and of the souls of the persons that live with us. We do have to take care of our subsistence, but without excessive worries, because life can end unexpectedly and we will be accountable of how we spent our time. Where are the wealth we accumulated, the hours we spent in front of a screen, the position we held, the time we spent getting more money, more pleasure? We will not take anything with us. Everything stays behind. The question is very simple: do you believe that you have an immortal soul and that you have the possibility to spend eternity with God, because Jesus Christ had freed you from the slavery of sin? If the answer is yes, than the question is: what are you doing so your soul can go to Heaven? We need to deepen our relationship with God, be intimate with him, ask what can we do to please him, to repay so much love that we receive every day. After all, how do you want to spend the eternity with God, if you don't know him, you don't relate to him while you are here on Earth? There is no logic on spending your whole life as God didn't exist and then die and want to have a place with him in Heaven. Unfortunately today many people want to give an image of a “light” Jesus, one that doesn’t demand anything and is only mercy and that everybody will be saved, regardless of their actions. This is a lie from the enemy of God. Salvation is for everybody, but God respects our freedom to choose what we do with our lives. His divine providence will look to offer all the means so we accept salvation, but at the end, it depends on the will of each one. So you are saying that here I will only suffer and I can't feel any pleasure? Of course not! God made all the pleasures of this world to relieve our burden and so that we would not get discouraged in our struggles, but we should enjoy them in a moderate way and not desperately search only for pleasure, as if our life is summarized only by what we feel here.
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.(…) Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. (…) But now you must put them all away: ranger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another(…) Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” (Colossians 3:1-14)
