Normally, this could be put into the “annoying” category, but for special needs parents like ourselves it moves up to the “near crisis” category. When your child has special needs you often get telephone calls, texts, and emails from school. Sometimes you are told that your child is crying or sick and needs to be picked up early. This can be quite stressful, wondering if today will be one of those days. It’s amazing how just knowing that you are connected to your child’s world by something as commonplace as a cell phone can reduce the anxiety and uncertainty you could be feeling. A missing cell phone seems like a full-blown catastrophe. You want to call your spouse to communicate that you are unable to receive any messages. You reach for your cell phone to make the call and feel uneasy when you realize you can’t because you left the phone on the kitchen countertop at home. In a sweat you ask your co-worker if you can use their phone to text your spouse that you don’t have your lifeline. You feel disconnected and out of sync the rest of the day. And there is good reason for this. Your child depends on you to be there when stuff happens. And you know that. It’s a lot of responsibility and it can feel like an excessive burden. It can weigh you down and distract you from work or whatever else you’re supposed to be doing that moment. These are the times when you need to ask God to help you. Help you to relax a bit, trust that everything is going to be just fine. Even when you left your cell phone at home.
