The line seemed gargantuan, the wait interminable as I steered my way to the drive-thru that morning. I had come for a cup of coffee and a supersized serving of inspiration. But what the Lord was offering that morning was a lesson in patience.
I was sorely tempted to turn on some tunes — but something told me the radio would not be my friend in that pre-working hour. So, instead, I turned to prayer, hoping to tune in to God’s message for the morning.
As I began my Hail Mary, I noticed a richly-leafed tree nearby. In my heart, I discerned this truth: as lovely as that natural phenomenon was, God loved me more than that handiwork of his creation.
Could this be what God wanted to impart to me that morning as I waited twenty minutes for a medium iced coffee? Ever the skeptic (after all, I was trained as a journalist), I doubted. And just when I might have given up my prayer, a woman pulled up beside me with a license plate that read “Jesus.” Coincidence? Or part of the divine plan?
I continued with my Rosary — this was a very long line, after all. And while I did not experience levitations or bilocation, I like to think that I had an experience of the living God in the drive-thru that morning.
This is what appeals to me about the contemplative life — being able to spot the invisible God’s hand throughout the course of the day. I had breakfast with the transcendent in the midst of the morning rush — all because I took advantage of the time allotted to me by a slow drive-thru lane.
I doubt that the marketing plan for this fast-food restaurant includes God — but then again, that’s the beauty of the Almighty. He shows up in the most unexpected places.
So the next time you’re forced into an unpleasant wait, why not take the time for a chat with God? You never know what miracles will appear before your eyes as you turn your soul toward Him.
