"2020: A Year for change" by Tami Urcia (CatholicMom.com) Image credit: Pixabay.com (2019), CC0/PD[/caption] There’s something about the year 2020 that inspires me. That perfect balance and repetition of numbers just makes it seem like this is going to be a great year. Some are even playing off the concept of 20/20 vision: perfect sight. As a busy working mom, I rarely have time for “extras.” The basic daily necessities of food, water, clothing, and shelter pretty much trump everything else. Those 10 items that need a little mending, well, I just don’t wear them anymore. Instead of heading a search party for the socks that have lost their pairs, they get thrown in a pile. And just in case I’m not embarrassed enough: I will be celebrating my eighth wedding anniversary this year and I still haven’t printed out any pictures, much less created an album. So, now that my youngest is 16 months old and my two oldest are becoming a tad more self-sufficient, I feel like the time is NOW! My 5-year-old inspired me with his whining to make Birth & Baptism albums for all of my kids. (Two down, two to go!) My inherent need for more energy has finally won over my sweet tooth and inspired me to get my health back on track. My desire to offer a life full of varied experiences to my family has inspired me to step out of my comfort zone to do some networking in order to encounter additional freelance opportunities in writing and translations. The time is NOW! I admit that this enthusiasm has also come in part due to the discovery of a new family member. This person came as a tremendous gift from God, opening our lives to new depths. They offer a whole different dimension, countless opportunities for growth and a seldom seen joy, generosity and awe. So, instead of staring out the window while I exercise, I am listening to enriching podcasts. Instead of clinging to fiction novels to ease my boredom, I am reading something that can actually make a difference in my spiritual life or teach me how to improve my family life. Instead of reaching for the nearest sugary substance to tide me over, I am downing six large glasses of water a day (GULP!). I make the conscience choice to be blissfully ignorant when it comes to most news in order to maintain a level of positivity. I even joke with my coworkers that the only meteorology source I trust is looking out the window. I mean, every other day in the Midwest the “winter weather advisories” only serve to scare everyone out of their wits and often turn out to be fake news. 2020 is here, ladies, and the time is NOW! Let’s make a positive change in our own lives in order to impact our families and our communities. Let’s hold fast to those resolutions, those tasks and those projects that we tend to let fall by the wayside. And let’s hold fast to the hand of Christ to lead us through it all.
