Leslea Wahl reviews a novel for teens that chronicles a very unusual day in the life of a teenager who's roped into babysitting on a snow day.
God’s Sparrows
by Kathleen Vincenz
Publisher: Squirrels at the Door Publishing
Review:
Teenager Rose is dealing with plenty of her own problems, and she certainly doesn’t need the added responsibility of dealing with a handful of neighborhood children. But when an unexpected snowstorm hits, that is exactly what happens, creating a chaotic and engaging story.
I was quite drawn to Rose who would much rather watch old classic movies and dream of the past. But on this fateful day, she is forced to face reality. While keeping her young charges safe and protected, through a series of unusual and humorous events, Rose discovers her inner strength and turns to her forgotten faith.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. God's Sparrows was quirky and like nothing I’ve ever quite experienced before, but as the story progressed, I grew to care for Rose and was rooting for her as she plodded along through her very unusual day.
Themes of self-esteem, loss, friendship, standing up for the vulnerable, and discovering yourself, keep this entertaining story grounded in reality and gives teens quite a few issues to ponder.
Summary:
Rose didn’t expect to babysit six children. But, by the end of the day, she’s chased around three-year old triplets, wrangled stubborn seven-year-olds, and saved a baby. Now, she’s climbing out of windows, trekking through snowstorms, and escaping from unexpected villains …
Can she shake her fears, find her faith, and keep the children safe through it all? It’s never a dull moment following Rose and her found family on a journey through the quirky, midwestern town of Pencilberg.
