Angels are very powerful beings who see God face to face. Every time they appear in the Bible, they inspire awe and wonder. They are messengers who carry our prayers to Heaven and also bring inspiration from God. They intercede for us, and we can always ask for their protection.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (336) teaches us that every person has a guardian angel who accompanies us from the moment of our conception until death, and whose mission is to watch over us, protect us, inspire us, and above all, help us one day to attain the glory of Heaven.

I began to develop a devotion to my guardian angel during my youth, after reading a book about Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio), who recommended that each person give tasks to their own guardian angel so as not to leave him idle. These tasks might include, for example, asking the angel to speak to someone else’s angel on our behalf when we need to say something difficult, so that the angel can go ahead and pave the way for us. Or they might be practical things, like helping us find a parking spot or making sure we wake up on time. Lately, he’s been helping me a lot to remember the things I forget.

Stories of My Guardian Angel

I have many stories to tell about my angel — about how he truly makes his presence felt in my life. One of them is that in early October 2014, I was hospitalized with lung problems, still suffering from complications following the bone marrow transplant I’d had in February of that year. I am a consecrated member of the Schoenstatt Apostolic Movement, which would celebrate its 100th anniversary on October 18, 2014. It was a very important day for me, and if I hadn’t been sick, I would have been in Germany for the celebrations. Since I couldn’t travel, I wanted at least to participate in the celebrations at the nearest Schoenstatt Shrine. The days went by, and there was no estimate of when I would be discharged. On the 17th, I called the home of the priests who ministered at the hospital to see if I could at least receive Holy Communion on the 18th.

I was very sad when the secretary told me that demand for priests was very high that weekend and they were only visiting hospitals in cases that were very serious and life-threatening. I hung up the phone and immediately complained to my guardian angel. I told him that he knew how important that day was to me and that I couldn’t even receive the Eucharist.

The next day, I received a phone call early in the morning. It was the priests’ secretary, who told me exactly this: “Your guardian angel must be very powerful. We received an urgent call from the hospital where you’re staying to attend someone in the ICU. And since the priest is going there, he can also bring you Communion.”

I was deeply moved and thanked my dear guardian angel immensely. And the good news kept coming: A little later, the doctor stopped by my room and said I’d made an unexpected improvement and that I’d be able to go home that very day! More thanks to my holy angel, who also gave me the joy of being able to return home after more than 10 days in the hospital.

Praying for the Intercession of Our Children's Guardian Angels

When my oldest son entered his teens, I thought about reaching out to his guardian angel — and those of my other children — as well. I asked them to let me know whenever any of my children were facing an issue I needed to be aware of and intervene in. They always answered my calls. Once, my oldest son started dating a girl without us knowing. Once again, his angel stepped in, and I had the intuition to ask him about it. I told him, “I know you have to tell me something because your angel warned me.”

Right away, he complained, saying his angel was a tattletale, and then he told me what was going on. I explained that his angel only wants what’s best for him, that he loves him with infinite love and wants him to be in Paradise one day, that’s why he tells me the things I need to know to help him.

My children have learned to develop a deep relationship with their guardian angel, even though they know that eventually I might find out something they didn’t want to tell me. They have already experienced the protective power of their angels and how they can help with spiritual growth and practical life. When my two oldest children were worried about finding a good person to marry, they asked their guardian angel to speak with the guardian angel of the person who was already part of God’s plan for them and to arrange for them to meet. My oldest son got married this year, and my daughter is already planning her wedding for 2028.

Form a partnership with your children’s guardian angels. They love them even more than you do, for your children were entrusted to them by God to help them on the path to true happiness. Their mission is for your children to be holy and to love God above all things. And, of course, give your own angel plenty of tasks; he will certainly help you with this arduous mission of being a mother.

Eles sempre me atenderam.
