Tami Kiser finds some memorable but easy ways to celebrate Pentecost with your family.

Pentecost is the celebration of the beginning of the Church. It’s literally like a birthday. It occurs this year on Sunday, June 5. So take a little time now to plan some simple, but impactful ways to celebrate. One of the easiest ways to celebrate Pentecost is with a cake. And of course, add candles. These make it not only seem like a birthday, but the flames remind us of the tongues of fire. And use red sprinkles or trim with red frosting on your cake.

Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost—add the color wherever you can, including wearing it yourselves.

Another spectacular and memorable dessert is Cherries Jubilee. It's perfect for this occasion. You don’t have to be a French pastry chef to pull this one off, either, but you will certainly look like one. It’s really easy and lots of fun! Try this recipe. You can even just use cherry pie filling if you want, and douse it with the brandy. (And don’t worry about the alcohol content—this is what catches on fire and all burns away!)

Finally, I have a suggestion for décor for the day. This can be done the day of or in preparation for the feast day. It’s a fun craft that can take on many variations. It’s basically a mobile with the tongues of fire hanging below. Children of every age can help make this. And what a fine way to remember what day it is and what event is being celebrated!
