Lectio Divina out loud: Erika Dix is reminded that even with lots of change, Jesus stays the same.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)
There is a lot going on in our world today. So much is changing with politics, media, technology, schools, neighborhoods, families, and individuals. With computers getting smarter and tasks getting simpler, where will we be in a few years? What will we be doing?
Connection between people is so much faster, but are we truly connecting on a meaningful level? Getting places is easier but are we losing the spirit of the journey? Processes have sped up, but do we remember what is beneficial about taking the time or waiting in anticipation?
Jesus is the same
I have a lot more questions in this article rather than answers, as I am still pondering this in the quiet of my heart, as Mary had done. Perhaps what we can start from is the verse I found in the Letter to the Hebrews. Jesus is unchanging, and the proof is in the pudding, or at least it is in the Bible. All of His teachings in the Gospels are pertinent today, as much as they were back then, and He did not use ChatGPT to write them. Jesus will be there for us as well as His word, now and forever.
Imitate their faith
The verse before this one is similar to our current situation as well.
Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. (Hebrews 13:7)
We can look to those who have taught us before and perhaps touched us in ways to help us. I have seen this in great homilies spoken at Mass, avid discussions in Bible studies, and in the personal connections I have made when working with my spiritual director. The words I hear have so much more weight when they have come from those with great faith, and I yearn to imitate them.
A great book
Now if we put this together, Jesus is unchanging, and His teachings are fully present for us today. We have faith-filled leaders in our lives to help speak to us, and even show us how to live out our lives as God would like us to. There are changes happening all around us, but we also have choices. We can ask Jesus or we can ask ChatGPT. We can get answers from the Lord or from the internet. Jesus’ timing on His response may not be instantaneous and we may have to wait a little bit for a response, but there is a great book we can read while we wait. It is called the Bible, and I highly recommend it.
Prayer:
Thank you, Jesus for never changing and for your timeless teachings. Please help us when we ask for guidance in our ever-changing world.
