Cassidy Van Slyke Blenke invites God to join her family during the busy moments of daily life through impromptu prayer, podcasts in the car, and more.
Creating space for daily faith touch points with a young family is sometimes impossible, especially when you’re navigating the role of today’s mama warrior (caregiver, nurse, meal planner, project manager, driver, financial planner, cleaner, garbage person, repair person, and much more).
Many times, we designate a time or even put it on the family calendar to do something, and then life gets in the way. I’ve found that I do my best to schedule time to attend Mass and gather the children, but then it just doesn’t happen because someone else is having an issue, or I’m pulled in a different direction, or I need to put out another fire.
One tactic I’ve found for staying close to God, Jesus, and Mary in our daily lives is bringing them “on the go,” as I like to say — for example, on our many daily family car rides as we drive to school and venture back and forth between activities.
Listen to the Gospel While Driving
Gathering everyone into the car and then driving to destinations with four small children is no simple task. When everyone is crying, or even in random moments of calm, I will invite God into the car and play the Gospel. One of my favorite Podcasts to play for the family and myself is Pray As You Go, which features the reading of the Gospel with daily reflections and readings. Often, the podcast plays beautiful and calming music, inviting listeners to talk to Jesus and reflect on the daily Gospel.
When you call me, and come and pray to me, I will listen to you. (Jeremiah 29:12)
I received podcast and content recommendations from my fellow faithful mom friends and the women of the Catholicmom.com community. Others have suggested Word on Fire, Bishop Barron’s podcast, and Catholic Mom’s very own Catholic Momcast. One reader suggested utilizing the Libby app with a local library card to access spiritual audiobooks.
By listening when I don’t have the bandwidth to sit and read or even scroll, I can make a point to channel inner peace and connect while shuffling through the chaos of everyday life.
Keep Prayers Simple
Another simple tactic is to display a rosary from our rearview mirror and pray while I’m driving. We make our prayer as basic as, “Thank you, God, for this beautiful day,” or “God, please help us get through today.” That rosary is an easy reminder that He’s with us on our travels, each time I turn left or right.
When I embark on my daily mindless tasks, I can choose to invite God along for the ride. Even though I have a chaotic, busy calendar, I find a point of loving connection and peace with God, myself, and my little ones, together.
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. (James 4:8a)
