Eucharistic Amazement: Experience the Wonder of the Mass
By Father Randy L. Stice
Publisher: Pauline Books & Media
Perhaps, at some point in your life, you wrestled with the question, “Why go to Mass?”
Even though I was baptized Catholic and attended Catholic schools, during much of my life I wondered why Mass was compulsory on Sundays. It wasn’t that I didn’t love God — it was more of a question as to what I could derive from the Mass. What was the point of the liturgy, anyway? I thought I could praise God safely cocooned in my bedroom. Why bother to make the trek to church early on a Sunday morning, when I could really use some sleep?
Eventually, I came to appreciate the beauty of the Mass. My soul began to stir at the singing of the Gloria and, as a lector, I developed a better understanding of the readings. What really moved me, however, was the reception of the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. I longed to be one with my Savior, and the moments after Communion helped to fill my deepest longings.
Given my personal history with the Mass, I was curious about the new book from Pauline Books and Media, Eucharistic Amazement: Experience the Wonder of the Mass, by Father Randy L. Stice. I found this book to be a real game-changer in terms of enhancing my appreciation of the Mass.
This book blends meditation with concrete action steps for fostering reverence for the Eucharistic feast. Throughout this work, Father Stice offers steps for “nurturing Eucharistic amazement.” For instance, on page 18, the author suggests imitating Saint Francis of Assisi by writing a poem in response to the Eucharist. He also recommends getting the creative juices flowing by following Saint Thomas Aquinas’ lead and writing a hymn in honor of Holy Communion. He also notes you can portray your appreciation in artistic form by creating a drawing or painting celebrating the Eucharist (an interesting tip for children and adults alike).
Amazement in the Mass
On page 19, Father Stice points out that there are two moments in particular during the Mass that foster Eucharistic amazement: the Consecration and the Communion Rite. In case you are not familiar with them, the Consecration occurs when the elements of bread and wine are transubstantiated into Christ’s Body and Blood. The Communion Rite refers to the distribution and reception of Holy Communion.
The more we contemplate the reality of these mysteries, the more likely we are to be delighted by the Eucharist in our midst. It is truly a miracle that Jesus offers Himself to us under the guise of bread and wine. It is incredible to think how Christ humbles Himself to allow us the distinct privilege of being united with Him. If we really think about it, the natural response to this supernatural occurrence is amazement.
Father Stice draws on Scripture, the Catechism, and the musings of the saints to help make his case. As a result, his conclusions are dogmatically sound, yet also refreshing for a modern audience. I found that, the more I read, the more my love grew for the Eucharist.
A Handbook for Holiness
In the end, Eucharistic Amazement is a wonderful handbook for holiness. The more we look with wonder on the Eucharist, the more we will get out of the Mass. I understand now that, during those days when I failed to appreciate the Mass, I really did not understand the power of the Eucharist to transform my life. Now that I do, I find that I look forward to Sunday Mass with a heart filled with anticipation. I hope and pray that this will be your experience as well!
