Katie Flodder shares 5 Catholic podcasts you’ll want to subscribe to ASAP.
I’m a self-proclaimed podcast junkie. If I’m doing the dishes, I’ve got an earbud in. If I’m driving around town ticking items off the to-do list, a podcast is keeping me company. Podcasts have become my #1 productivity hack for tackling the most unpleasant tasks or for making the after-school sports activity run just a bit more palatable.
A great podcast feels like a chat with good friends while tucked on the couch, hands curled around a warm cup of coffee. Finding a new podcast is like unearthing a rare gem amongst the sheer volume of content in the digital world. For many of us as Catholics, we also want content that encourages us or enriches our understanding of the faith.
Many of us are already aware of the Catholic heavy hitters in the podcasting world like Father Mike Schmitz’s Bible in a Year or The Chris Stefanick Show, yet there are so many Catholic podcasts equally worthy of your time beyond the names you already know and love.
Here's my top five newest discoveries in the Catholic you need to hear:
Father David Michael Moses Podcast
Father began his priestly ministry in my home parish, and it was through his encouragement that I returned to the sacrament of confession. However, I can assure you this isn’t the reason he’s earned the #1 spot on my list. He is on a mission to introduce young people to Christ, and he meets them where they are — on the Internet. Chances are you (or more likely your teen) has seen his hilarious faith-filled videos, but did you know he also hosts a podcast? He gives his take from a priest’s perspective on a variety of topics from Gwen Stefani to Satanic Black Masses. This podcast is such a gift to parents and teens — listen to this in the car together and I guarantee it will spark meaningful conversation. This podcast streams from podcasting platforms and is also available on Youtube where he posts additional content.
Cuddle Up: Catholic Storytime
As the title suggests, you can cuddle up and listen to children’s Catholic books in this podcast hosted by award winning children’s author Gracie Jagla. With the voice of a Disney princess, she’ll have your child’s complete attention. Best of all, the books are read by the authors themselves. Gracie and the author also chat about the book’s background details, providing richer details in a kid-friendly way.
Catholic Classics
Have you ever wanted to tackle the great Catholic works of literature but felt too intimidated? Catholic Classics is your new best friend hosted by Fr. Jacob Bertrand, O.P. and Fr. Michael-Joseph, O.C.D.. They break down classics like The Confessions of Saint Augustine and translate them into relevancy for modern-day audiences. It’s like a Catholic book club with two wonderfully engaging priests.
The Catholic Coaching Podcast
The life coaching space is fairly overrun by New Age ideology, but Catholics need guidance too! Life coaches Matt and Erin Ingold discuss personal growth topics with the foundation of a Catholic world view. From fear of failure to giving yourself permission to dream, they dive deep into the topics that hold us back from living fully. They often discuss the nuances of each the four temperaments like “How to Parent a Choleric Child.” The Ingolds have become my personal life coaches in my earbuds.
Among the Lilies
Host Cameron Fradd (That name sound familiar? Her husband is podcaster Matt Fradd of Pints with Aquinas) started this podcast with a desire for authentic discussions relevant to Catholic women. No surface level conversations allowed — Cameron is going to talk about things that really matter to women without editing herself. With episodes like “Men That Think They’re Holier Than You” and “Marriage is Hard!” listeners feel like Cameron is a close friend. Among the Lilies streams from podcasting platforms and is also available on YouTube, where she posts additional content.
Bonus: Veggies & Virtue
Although not expressly Catholic, this hidden treasure is too good not to share and I’m no gatekeeper. Healthy eating is one of the most stressful hurdles for parents. Pediatric dietician and “Picky Eating Expert” Ashley Smith dishes out healthy eating advice for parents with a dose of Jesus. Ashley has a gift for teaching parents how to feed their kids nutritious meals while also giving themselves grace in the process. While the podcast is no longer releasing new episodes, there’s an archive of nearly 200 episodes of priceless advice.
