Maria V. Gallagher explores simple — and free — ways to raise your happiness quotient today.

Perhaps you feel overwhelmed by the news of the day — or the daily grind within your own household. In either case, it is easy to become despondent, with darkness enveloping you like a cloak on a bitterly cold winter’s morning.

I’ve been there, and I have found that I have been able to raise my happiness quotient by pursuing a simple path — one laid out by saints like Mother Teresa and Thérèse of Lisieux. If you are suffering from severe depression, please reach out to a health care professional who can guide you on the journey to healing and restoration. But if you’re battling a mild case of the blues, you may find it helpful to consider these five ways to lift your spirits:

Make a gratitude list.

Spend five minutes thinking of the people, places, events, and things that spark gratitude. It can be especially helpful to jot the list down on paper, in the notepad of your phone, or on your computer. At the end of the day, read back over the list for an extra dose of happiness.

Reach out to someone in need.

Consider clearing out your closet and donating gently-used clothing to an organization that serves the poor. I have found that closet makeovers are especially therapeutic to both body and soul. There is something about ridding ourselves of excess that is satisfying and freeing.

Write a thank-you note to someone who has graced your life.

Consider writing to a teacher, coach, or principal that had a positive influence on you. Or maybe you want to express your gratitude to a “Mommy Mentor” who made a profound difference in the way you approach the vocation of motherhood.

Pay someone a compliment on social media — and be sure to include some emojis.

Shine your light in cyberspace by offering a kind word. When you share love, your mood is likely to brighten. And you will lift the spirits of others in the process.

Have a heart-to-heart with Jesus.

He, above anyone else, knows what you are going through. I have found these conversations are best in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. But if you cannot get out to a church, Google “Adoration Chapel Livestream” and you will find a number of holy spaces where you can lay your troubles before Christ.

Meditating on Scripture, taking an exercise break, and soaking in a few minutes of sunshine can also help to elevate your mood. If all else fails, remember these words from the prophet Jeremiah:

For I know well the plans I have in mind for you — oracle of the Lord — plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)
