Janele Hoerner counters our modern wish to remain in control with the sage advice of St. Teresa of Ávila.

We as humans, in modern society, are so quick to try to add a level of control into our lives. Even when we state that we trust fully in God and are leaving our lives up to his plan, many times those control factors attempt to seep in.

It is in our low moments, where suffering seems to be taking hold of us, that we can jump to those things that materially bring us comfort and a feeling of control. Though we need to understand and fully believe – even amid the suffering – that our trials and our small feats in this world are enough.

Living our lives day in and day out through the late nights and early mornings, folding laundry, piles of dishes in our sinks, constant needs being thrown at us from our children, and the many daily repeated tasks that we complete in our home – behind those closed doors – is exactly what Christ wants us to be doing.

It is in the surrender and the love of our families that we unite ourselves most with Christ.

“Do what lies in your power; surrender yourself to me, and do not be disturbed about anything; rejoice in the good that has been given you, for it is very great; my Father takes delight in you, and the Holy Spirit love you.” (Words spoken by Jesus to St. Teresa of Ávila; Spiritual Testimonies #10)
