Kimberly Novak shares a process for praying with Scripture when you're in need of strength, courage, and healing.
I have my favorite Scripture passages for almost every situation life may throw at me. Instances where I need to rely on God’s Word for courage, trust, and wisdom are most often my search parameters. I’m sure these search words are probably used most often by busy moms as well. I wonder how frequently verses for living the healing word of God are searched out.
In Search of the Perfect Verse
Recently, I have been getting knocked down and back up again, which brings to mind a popular song from the 1980s, but let’s not go there. It's easy for me to grab my Bible and look for inspirational verses when I need a quick jolt of strength or courage, yet lately, I struggle to find the perfect verse for physical healing.
When searching Scripture for discernment, courage, or healing, is it possible to get caught up in the “perfect verse” and lose sight of how God speaks to us?
Perhaps there is no “perfect” verse, and God might be getting me to go deeper into Scripture by sending me this way and that. I’ve had to let go of commitments, change, and reorder activities, all because my body is fighting me. I initially got through it by praying out loud and letting the evil one know that Jesus is in my house, and he can leave and let us alone. I even found myself recreating a scene from the movie, War Room, where the lead actress opens the door and lets the devil out! I’m sure my neighbors got a kick out of that one! By the way, I highly recommend that film for anyone looking to suit up with the armor of God.
It can be very disappointing to change or cancel plans that were surely created together with God. It is important to equip yourself with the tools to deal with setbacks and share these feelings in prayer. God’s timing for all of this has been perfectly placed as we are coming off the season of Lent, with our hearts prepared to let go and sacrifice.
My Go-To Verse
So I gave my attention to the Lord God, to seek Him by prayer and pleading, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. (Daniel 9:3, NASB)
I was confident that I would not let the devil use my illnesses to take me down and keep me away from serving God in the way God and I had set out to do. I did resolve that some of my commitments would need to be changed or canceled, but my faith and relationship with God remind me that when God closes a door, it is simply a way to move forward.
Through this experience, I have also learned the importance of linking my go-to Scripture verse, which I use for courage, strength, and wisdom, to a verse about living the healing word of God. This creates a wonderful armor shield when you open your back door and let the devil out because Jesus dwells in your heart and home.
Perhaps you already have a few verses picked out when healing is needed, but here are some suggestions to help arm your prayer moments when healing and God’s help are most needed.
Link Your Favorite Verses
Take your favorite verse for strength, courage, and wisdom, and link it to one of the healing verses.
- "Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; Save me and I will be saved, for you are my praise." (Jeremiah 17:14, NASB)
- “Behold, I am going to bring to it healing and a remedy, and I will heal them; and I will reveal to them an abundance of peace and truth.” (Jeremiah 17:14, NASB)
- “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22, NASB)
- “And you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water; and I will remove sickness from your midst.” (Exodus 23:25, NASB)
Take Action: Pray, Reach Out, and Trust
Once you have discerned the Scripture verses that work for you, it’s time to spring into action. The steps are easy,
- Specifically name your healing intention to God through prayer.
- Gather your Scripture verses, post them around your home, and mark them for easy access in your Bible.
- Reach out to friends, family, and church groups to share your prayer needs with them.
- Trust and wait on the Lord to open your next door because He never closes a door without setting you up for something bigger. You may not see it in the thick of things, but I promise something good is coming!
Taking these steps may seem difficult at first and even frustrating at times. Try not to overwhelm yourself with choosing the right passages. Let the Holy Spirit guide you, seek out a spiritual director, or phone a friend for suggestions.
Soon, you will find that when you equip yourself with the verses that work for you, living the healing word of God will become second nature! And if it helps, why not add a scene from your favorite faith-based movie? You never know how the Spirit might lead you!
