Margaret Rash encourages cultivating devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary during the month of August.
Here we are, in the middle of summer. But between the pool parties and beach days, you might be already thinking about back-to-school time with August fast approaching. Besides being an excellent month for school supplies sales, August is also a perfect month to renew, or begin, your devotion to the Blessed Mother and her Immaculate Heart.
Although the Feast Day of the Immaculate Heart of Mary has already passed us by, the Church dedicates the entire month of August to her Immaculate Heart! So why not send your kids back to school this year with devotion to their heavenly Mother?
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
This doesn't have to be complicated, particularly if you have little ones. There are many simple ways to cultivate a love and devotion to Mary and her Immaculate Heart. And it's a wonderful gift to Jesus to honor His mother and turn to her for her intercession for our families.
Here are some ways that you and members of your family could potentially grow closer to Mary this month:
Observe the First Saturdays Devotion
This can be done on your own or as a family and involves having the intention of consoling the Immaculate Heart of Mary, going to Confession, receiving the Eucharist, praying the rosary, and meditating on the mysteries of the rosary – More information can be found at Catholic Answers.
Pray the Rosary
Begin praying a daily family Rosary.
Make rosaries as a family.
Include a Devotion, Sacramental, or Image
Pray a prayer of consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary (either as an individual or as a family). You can use a good book to guide you through preparation like 33 Days to Morning Glory or True Devotion to Mary.
Become enrolled in the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Learn the prayer on the Miraculous Medal and pray it three times a day together, perhaps as part of your morning or evening prayers (“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee”).
Hang an image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary somewhere prominent in your home.
The Little Rose Shop has beautiful free coloring pages for young children.
Catholic Mom also offers free coloring pages with Rosary coloring pages as well as a set of Marian coloring pages with prayers.
Whatever you decide to try, remember you can’t send your kids back to school, or begin your homeschool year, any better way than by preparing everyone with a deeper devotion to our Immaculate Mother!
