Lectio Divina Out Loud: Erika Dix realizes her time is better spent looking for Jesus rather than text messages.
“Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)
The other day my smart watch stopped sending me vibrations to let me know I had received a text on my phone. I was so frustrated! First, because it had taken me a long time to figure out how to set it up, and second, I had missed important information and texts.
The Flesh is Weak
I happened to go to Adoration later that same day, and I confess that it had been a long time since I'd prayed and sat with the Lord. During Adoration, it was pointed out to me how I was frustrated at not being notified and missing information when my watch was not working the way it should. Jesus showed me that I should be equally frustrated when I miss His notifications! I need to take the time to set up how I will receive His “vibrations” so that I do not miss any information, or Grace, He wants to send to me.
Undergo the Test
I know we are in Easter time, but the lyrics from one of my favorite Holy Thursday hymns popped into my head. The lyrics are: “Stay here and keep watch with Me, watch and pray.” These words of Jesus are spoken during the most difficult of trials any human can undergo. The fact that Jesus did, and did it for me, speaks volumes. So, when I hear in Adoration, “be open to My notifications,” I’m going to sit up and listen!
The Spirit Is Willing
Through most of Jesus’ Gospel teachings, He is always telling us to either watch or pray. In the Gospel of St. Mark, Jesus says, “What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’” (Mark 13:37). Since we Christians are an Easter people, we know that Jesus is not still in the Garden of Gethsemane, but instead has risen and brought us new life. We know of His love for us, and that He wants to keep teaching us, every day.
This is why we need to set ourselves up for receiving His notifications throughout our day. Here are some examples of how we can set up our “Jesus watch,” so we do not miss anything important.
- Time in prayer either in the morning or at night
- Pausing during the day to LISTEN and FEEL
- Praying the Rosary, and meditating on different Mysteries to find Jesus through Mary
- Reading spiritual books
- Listening to Catholic or Christian Podcasts (1x/week)
Hopefully, you will not need to call in tech support to find out why you are not receiving your messages, but the Holy Spirit is always willing to lend a hand in that regard as well.
Prayer:
Thank You, Jesus! It is no coincidence that it was my watch You used to bring my attention back to You. I pray that I may never miss all the love, mercy and grace You send me.
