But I've never really read it. So I've made a really early resolution for 2023: read the *Catechism*. In a year. Beginning January 1, 2023, Fr. Mike Schmitz is launching a new podcast, *[The Catechism in a Year](https://ascensionpress.com/pages/catechisminayear). *This coincides with the publication of the [Catechism of the Catholic Church, Ascension edition](https://ascensionpress.com/products/catechism-of-the-catholic-church-ascension-edition), which frames the Catechism in a color-coded system to aid the reader in understanding the material.   ![20221028 BSzyszkiewicz 2](https://www.catholicmom.com/hs-fs/hubfs/20221028%20BSzyszkiewicz%202.jpg?width=1080&height=1080&name=20221028%20BSzyszkiewicz%202.jpg)   As a visual learner, I find color-coding to be an essential study tool. That's part of what has made me a fan of Ascension's [*Great Adventure Catholic Bible*](https://ascensionpress.com/products/the-great-adventure-catholic-bible), in which a color-key system helps the reader understand the timeline of actual Biblical events in history. The color-coding for this edition of the Catechism is topical, rather than historical, but it aids the reader in mentally categorizing the material for better understanding.   ![null](https://www.catholicmom.com/hs-fs/hubfs/20221028%20BSzyszkiewicz%204.jpg?width=1080&height=1080&name=20221028%20BSzyszkiewicz%204.jpg)   This edition of the *Catechism* is a perfect companion volume to the *Great Adventure Catholic Bible*. The books are the same size, printed on sturdier paper than you'd usually find in a Bible, and packed with colorful features to aid in understanding. This *Catechism* includes tables showing the sources from Scripture and Church documents, a listing of words to know for each chapter and index of where those words are used in that chapter (you'll find the words in the Glossary at the end), and a topical breakdown of each section of the *Catechism*. The top corner of each page is in color to keep you visually on track.   ![20221028 BSzyszkiewicz 6](https://www.catholicmom.com/hs-fs/hubfs/20221028%20BSzyszkiewicz%206.jpg?width=1080&height=1080&name=20221028%20BSzyszkiewicz%206.jpg)  Exclusive to this edition of the Catechism is Ascension's own Appendix, "Sources from Scripture and the Church," a clear introduction to the hundreds of sources used to create the Catechism. And with every purchase of the [*Catechism of the Catholic Church,*](https://ascensionpress.com/products/catechism-of-the-catholic-church-ascension-edition) Ascension edition, you'll receive a free double-sided foldout chart, "The Catechism at a Glance," a visual overview of the foundations of our faith.   ![null](https://www.catholicmom.com/hs-fs/hubfs/20221028%20BSzyszkiewicz%207.jpg?width=1080&height=1080&name=20221028%20BSzyszkiewicz%207.jpg)   Learn more about the useful features of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Ascension edition, download the reading plan, join a Facebook community, and find out how to support the 2023 podcast at [AscensionPress.com](https://ascensionpress.com/pages/catechisminayear).   ![null](https://www.catholicmom.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Ascension.Fr.%20Mike.CIY%20High%20res.jpg?width=3000&height=3000&name=Ascension.Fr.%20Mike.CIY%20High%20res.jpg) --- Copyright 2022 Barb Szyszkiewicz Images: copyright 2022 Barb Szyszkiewicz, all rights reserved. *Catechism in a Year Podcast* logo courtesy of Ascension Press.   ### Share this article [![Share on Facebook](https://static.hubspot.com/final/img/common/icons/social/facebook-24x24.png)](http://www.facebook.com/share.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2Fplan-to-read-the-catechism-in-a-year%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Dfacebook) [![Share on Twitter](https://static.hubspot.com/final/img/common/icons/social/twitter-24x24.png)](https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?original_referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2Fplan-to-read-the-catechism-in-a-year%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Dtwitter&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2Fplan-to-read-the-catechism-in-a-year%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Dtwitter&source=tweetbutton&text=Plan%20to%20Read%20the%20Catechism%20in%20a%20Year) [![Share on Email](https://static.hubspot.com/final/img/common/icons/social/email-24x24.png)](mailto:?subject=Check%20out%20https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2Fplan-to-read-the-catechism-in-a-year%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Demail%20&body=Check%20out%20https%3A%2F%2Fwww.catholicmom.com%2Farticles%2Fplan-to-read-the-catechism-in-a-year%3Futm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Demail) ** #### About the Author ![Barb Szyszkiewicz](https://www.catholicmom.com/hubfs/BSzyszkiewicz%202022.jpg) ### [Barb Szyszkiewicz](https://www.catholicmom.com/articles/author/barb-szyszkiewicz-ofs) Barb Szyszkiewicz, senior editor at [CatholicMom.com](http://catholicmom.com), is a wife, mom of 3 young adults, and a Secular Franciscan.
