Barb Szyszkiewicz examines the Ascension edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the subject of a podcast beginning January 2023.

I'm a cradle Catholic, but I've never read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. We have a couple of copies of the Catechism in our home, and I open it from time to time to reference something for work or for my own writing. But I've never really read it. So I've made a really early resolution for 2023: read the Catechism. In a year.

Beginning January 1, 2023, Fr. Mike Schmitz is launching a new podcast, The Catechism in a YearThis coincides with the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Ascension edition, which frames the Catechism in a color-coded system to aid the reader in understanding the material.

As a visual learner, I find color-coding to be an essential study tool. That's part of what has made me a fan of Ascension's Great Adventure Catholic Bible, in which a color-key system helps the reader understand the timeline of actual Biblical events in history. The color-coding for this edition of the Catechism is topical, rather than historical, but it aids the reader in mentally categorizing the material for better understanding.

This edition of the Catechism is a perfect companion volume to the Great Adventure Catholic Bible. The books are the same size, printed on sturdier paper than you'd usually find in a Bible, and packed with colorful features to aid in understanding. This Catechism includes tables showing the sources from Scripture and Church documents, a listing of words to know for each chapter and index of where those words are used in that chapter (you'll find the words in the Glossary at the end), and a topical breakdown of each section of the Catechism. The top corner of each page is in color to keep you visually on track.

Exclusive to this edition of the Catechism is Ascension's own Appendix, "Sources from Scripture and the Church," a clear introduction to the hundreds of sources used to create the Catechism. And with every purchase of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Ascension edition, you'll receive a free double-sided foldout chart, "The Catechism at a Glance," a visual overview of the foundations of our faith.
